SEAL BAY CONSERVATION PARK

With its unspoiled wilderness and stunning beauty, it is no surprise that Kangaroo Island is consistently in South Australia’s top ten tourist destinations, as voted on Trip Advisor. And no trip to KI is complete without a visit to Seal Bay.

Seal Bay has been home to an Australian sea lion population for thousands of years, and offers one of the most exceptional nature-based experiences in the world.

There are no enclosures or cages at Seal Bay. Instead, you will be taken into the heart of the colony where our experienced guides will teach you about these endangered animals. If you prefer, you can set your own pace on the wheelchair accessible 900 metre (return) boardwalk which meanders through the dunes to a number of viewing platforms.

Australian sea lions are unique to South Australia and Western Australia. They are an endangered species – their total population is about 14,700. Seal Bay is the third largest colony of this magnificent, wild creature.

This is the only place in the world where you can see Australian sea lions at close quarters and walk on a beach where pups play, bulls fight for supremacy and resting mothers suckle their young.

At Seal Bay you’ll have incredible views of the extraordinary coastline and sea lion colony, you’ll walk through an untouched dune system, and onto a pristine sandy beach. You will be given unique insights into how these endangered animals fish, surf, rest, interact with their pups and defend their territory.

REMARKABLE ROCKS & ADMIRALS ARCH

No Kangaroo Island holiday would be complete without a trek to one of the island’s signature landmarks, Remarkable Rocks. It took 500 million years for rain, wind, and pounding waves to create these aptly named granite boulders which are now part of the Flinders Chase National Park.

Early morning and early evening are the most ideal times to visit Kangaroo Island Remarkable Rocks, not only to avoid large crowds, but also to enjoy the stunning sunrises and sunsets around these impressive sculptures. Many of the rocks are covered by golden orange lichen, and interpretation signs describe even more details about the formation of the rocks.

Black mica, bluish quartz, and pinkish feldspar comprise most of the granite of Remarkable Rocks. These flat rocks are easy and safe to walk on during dry weather, but special caution should be taken when weather conditions become wet or windy. Strong winds and slippery rocks make it far easier to fall into the water.

The wooden boardwalk leading to the Remarkable Rocks is partially accessible for disabled visitors. The crest’s western platform provides an ideal vantage point to see the surrounding bays and the historic Cape Du Couedic Lighthouse. The equally photogenic Casuarina Islets can also be easily seen from the Kangaroo Island Remarkable Rocks.

The Flinders Chase National Park is also home to another distinct Kangaroo Island landmark, Admirals Arch, and a New Zealand fur seal colony.

AMERICAN RIVER

Known locally as ‘The River’, Kangaroo Island’s American River region sits on the western shore of Eastern Cove and also includes the Pelican Lagoon.

The region is named after American sealers that stayed on this part of the island for four months in 1803 and there is a memorial plaque in the main town to commemorate this.

The main village – American River – sits on a hillside surrounded by bush land and boasting spectacular views of the cove and mainland Australia. The channel houses Kangaroo Island’s most protected harbour where numerous yachts, sailboats and fishing boats dock. The outer bay offers some superb sailing and fishing, while the 2.5 mile long Island Beach is a great place for swimming and sunbaking.

The inner bay, also known as Pelican Lagoon, is a protected Aquatic Reserve thanks to its natural fish nursery. It is here where visitors will find the Pelican Lagoon Conservation Park, a 397 hectare nature reserve just south of the region’s main town. The park is spread across the island and includes five small inlets that provide habitat for woodland and wetland birds.

American River also has a strong oyster industry and oysters are available seasonally in restaurants along the harbour and in the town itself.

STOKES BAY & SNELLINGS BEACH

The secluded beach at Stokes Bay, located on Kangaroo Island’s serene north coast, is protected from the pounding surf by a large natural shallow pool surrounded by rocks. Stokes Bay is a perfect swimming beach and the unique rock tunnel entrance to the shore will delight you!

Nearby on Kangaroo Island’s north coast, is equally beautiful, Snellings Beach, with it’s beautiful turquoise waters and white sands

PENNINGTON BAY

Pennington Bay sits on the south coast of Kangaroo Island en-route to the Dudley Peninsula. It is a stunning bay that is famous for its surfing. In fact, it offers some of the best surfing on the island.

The water at Pennington Bay is not always ideal for swimming, though the stunning scenery is a great place to take some magnificent photographs.

Dolphins and whales can often be spotted swimming and playing in the water at Pennington Bay. Visitors are advised to come equipped with a camera and binoculars to truly enjoy the beauty of the bay and its wildlife.

The beach is surrounded by some stunning bushland, which is home to a variety of wildlife.
